Zayna woke up with a happy jolt! Today was the day for her family's big mountain hike. "Are we there yet?" she called, even before they left the house. Her fuchsia pink backpack, packed with snacks and a water bottle, felt light on her shoulders. Mama Nia and Baba Ken chuckled, already tying their hiking boots.

Soon, they were at the foot of Evergreen Peak, its towering slopes inviting them upwards. The air was fresh and smelled of pine. Baba Ken pointed to a sign: 'Stay on Marked Trails.' "It's important to follow the path, Zayna," he said gently. "That way, we all stay safe and together."

The climb began! Zayna bounded up the path, her energy boundless. "Look, Mama, a blue butterfly!" she exclaimed, pointing to a vibrant streak of color flitting past. It was hard to keep her eyes on the ground when so many beautiful things were around her.

A little further, Zayna spotted a cluster of unusually shiny pebbles just off the trail, sparkling like tiny jewels. "Wow!" she whispered, unable to resist. She gently stepped over a small root and meandered a few feet into the ferns, her eyes fixed on the glittery stones.

She picked up a particularly sparkly, emerald-green pebble and tucked it carefully into her backpack. When she looked up, her parents were a little further ahead than she remembered. A tiny shiver of uncertainty traced her arms. She decided to quickly catch up.

Zayna hurried forward, but the trail seemed to twist and turn in ways she didn't remember. The trees all started looking the same. She stopped, a knot forming in her stomach. Had she somehow left the main path again? She hesitated, unsure which way to go.

“Mama? Baba?” Zayna called out, her voice a little shaky. Only the rustle of leaves answered. Her heart thumped like a hummingbird’s wings. She was definitely lost. A tear welled in her eye, but then she remembered something Baba Ken always said: “If you ever get lost, Zayna, stay put. Don’t wander further.”

Zayna took a deep, wobbly breath. She looked around. She wouldn't wander further. Her eyes landed on a sturdy, brightly colored tree with smooth, reddish bark. "That's a good spot," she decided, walking carefully towards it. "I'll wait right here."

Sitting at the base of the reddish-barked tree, Zayna thought. What else did Baba say? “Make some noise!” Yes! She quickly unzipped her vibrant fuchsia backpack. The bright color would be easy to spot, even from far away. She held it up high, ready to wave.
